The Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport have today confirmed funding of €7m to Donegal for regional & local roads following the recent severe weather. The funding will provide for repair works to damaged roads and also some preventative measures to reduce impact of future flooding events.

Speaking today Cllr. Ciaran Brogan, Chair of Donegal County Council has welcomed this allocation stating that “recent flooding incidents coupled with the high level of rainfall over the last number of months, has caused considerable damage to roads in some areas of the county”.

Donegal County Council made a detailed submission to the Department of Transport in early February setting out details of works and funding required to repair the damage caused to roads, bridges and other essential infrastructure during the recent winter storms.

The Department is making monies available for repair work to regional and local roads in two tranches and Donegal County Council’s Severe Weather allocation under tranche 1 is €7million.  It is expected that the 2nd tranche will be allocated in May.

The Council is being requested by the Department to prioritise works according to the following:

  • Repair works in respect of roads, bridges & drainage
  • Preventative works to address flooding on roads particularly those roads which have been subject to repeated flooding in recent years.

A schedule of prioritised works, based on the criteria set out by the Department and within the limits of the funding available, will be agreed in the coming weeks.

“Council staff have been working hard over the last three months to respond to reports of damage to the roads and associated infrastructure.  And although every effort is being made to respond to all reports, it has, in some cases, taken longer than normal due to the large number of reports being received.  We would like to thank the public for their patience and ongoing co-operation” stated Cllr. Brogan.

He concluded “this funding is very welcome and it will help us greatly in repairing much of the damage caused during the recent storms”.
